Hyderabad to Hampi Cabs

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 1986) preserving the remains of Vijayanagara, the last great capital of a Hindu empire that flourished from the mid-14th century before being abandoned by the mid-16th century. Spread across a large, boulder-strewn landscape on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, the site is unusual for having one temple still in active worship — the Virupaksha Temple — alongside hundreds of ruined structures from the empire's height.

The Vittala Temple, roughly two kilometres from Virupaksha, is best known for its Stone Chariot — a shrine carved from granite, featured on India's fifty-rupee note — and its Musical Pillars, a set of carved stone columns that produce tones when struck. Because the wider site covers ruins, temples and viewpoints scattered over several kilometres, plan two to three days to explore Hampi's main heritage areas without rushing; a one-day visit is workable but covers less ground.
